Moulsham Lodge Play Areas

February 16, 2017

Following an article in the Moulsham Times "Great News" (Feb 2017) by Cllr Simon Cook, I feel the need to clarify the item referring to a "new Children's play area in Moulsham Lodge"

Unfortunately some of the information is incorrect.

1. "New Play Area" - I'm sorry to say there will be no new play area in Moulsham Lodge

2. "Lucan Av" yes we all know it is really Lucas Av! the equipment there is not being refurbished or replaced

3. However in Orange Tree Close, the bigger of the two play areas will have totally new play equipment that will accommodate children up to the age of 12 and Chelmsford City Council will be consulting residents (see below) to ensure we have a say in the plans. So watch this space for those details.

"The plan is to produce detail designs and undertake consultation with the designs; we propose to consult with local primary schools and perhaps make use of the local community centre for a public display. The feedback or preferences will help to determine the final design and then the procurement of the equipment, safety surfacing, etc.  This model is tried and tested and generally ensures that the play area is well received by the local community."

The budget identified in the Council's "Capital Programme" and the detailed description of it, will be amended (as below) following my intervention for clarification.

In order to clarify the proposed works the following text has been added. This is in reference to Item 3 in Appendix 1 and 2 ‘Play Area Refurbishments’.

"For clarification Orange Tree Close is the play area located in Moulsham Lodge and requires replacement and refurbishment. The current play areas at Orange Tree Close and Lucas Avenue (previously referred to as Lucan Avenue in Appendix 1 and 2) are currently classed as local play areas which are defined as smaller play areas in terms of age range, variety of equipment, play value, etc. The plan is to retain Lucas Avenue as such a local play area but to upgrade Orange Tree Close to a neighbourhood play area catering for children up to 12 years old, with more variety of equipment and therefore increasing its play value. There are no works planned to the equipped play area in Lucas Avenue. The reason for this choice is based on the fact that the play space available at Lucas Avenue is very small which does not allow for any changes due to the limited space. The play space at Orange Tree Close is larger and more accessible and as it is located near other local amenities such as shops and the community centre/church, it provides the scope for a neighbourhood play area."
