The development of the old community centre sight is a welcome end to years of uncertainty, both for the site itself and for the community organisation that rose from the ashes of the derelict and demolished community building.
It was with some disappointment a few years ago that the trustees of Moulsham Lodge Community Trust (MLCT) had to give up any hope of building a new £2 million pound replacement community building on the original site in Waltham Glen. I was pretty determined that it wouldn't end there but with luck and good timing, although not for the local police, we managed to secure the police station on Moulsham Lodge as a new community facility - now called the Community Station.
With the confirmation and final signatures still wet on the 99 year lease of the Community Station, it is perhaps poetic that the redevelopment of the old site has started this month also. I was pleased that the developers held a local consultation and allowed local residents a chance to comment, most of which were very complimentary. I am also pleased that some affordable housing is included as part of the development as this is such an important addition when house prices for Chelmsford remain well above the country average. I'm not sure if the development will have a new road name or not but, if it does I hope it represents something recognisably local to Moulsham Lodge considering its history.
